UPSC Civil Services Exam Pattern Explained

The civil services examination runs in three stages across roughly a year. Only the last two contribute to the final merit list.

Stage one: preliminary examination

Two objective papers on the same day. General studies paper one decides who qualifies. The aptitude paper is qualifying only and needs a minimum percentage. Prelims marks do not carry into the final ranking, and negative marking applies, so blind guessing is expensive.

Stage two: main examination

Nine descriptive papers written over several days. Two language papers are qualifying only. The essay, four general studies papers and two optional subject papers count towards the merit list. Answer writing, not reading volume, is what separates candidates here, and the papers are time-starved by design.

Stage three: personality test

An interview before a board, built largely around the detailed application form. Hobbies, home district, graduation subject and work history are all fair game, so every line on that form should be defensible.

The annual timeline

  1. Notification and application early in the year.
  2. Prelims a few months later.
  3. Mains roughly three months after prelims.
  4. Interviews and the final result the following year.

Eligibility in short

A bachelor degree in any discipline, with age limits and attempt limits that vary by category. Nationality requirements differ between the administrative and police services and other central services.

What to prioritise

Choose the optional subject early, because it carries substantial marks and shapes the mains schedule. Build the current affairs habit around one newspaper rather than a stack of monthly magazines, and start answer writing in the first month rather than after prelims.

Always confirm the pattern and dates against the current official notification, since details are revised periodically.
